พระสันตะปาปาเสด็จถึงออสเตรเลียแล้ว




เมื่อเวลา 15.00 น.ของวันอาทิตย์ที่ 13 กรกฏาคม 2008 (ตามเวลาซิดนี่ย์) สมเด็จพระสันตะปาปา เบเนดิกต์ ที่ 16 ประมุขสูงสุดแห่งพระศาสนจักรโรมันคาทอลิก ได้เสด็จมาถึงสนามบินกองทัพอากาศริชมอนด์ นครซิดนี่ย์ ประเทศออสเตรเลีย โดยสวัสดิภาพแล้ว ทันทีที่เครื่องบินพระที่นั่งลงจอด เควิน รัดด์ นายกรัฐมนตรีออสเตรเลีย, พระคาร์ดินัล จอร์ช เพลล์ ประมุขอัครสังฆณฑลซิดนี่ย์ ได้มารอรับเสด็จอย่างพร้อมหน้า

โอกาสนี้ พระสันตะปาปา ไม่ได้กล่าวสุนทรพจน์อย่างเป็นทางการ แต่ทรงกล่าวกับบรรดาเยาวชนที่มารอต้อนรับว่า "มีผู้คนจำนวนมากในโลกที่ยังไม่เคยได้ยินพระวาจาของพระเจ้า ฉะนั้น จึงเป็นเรื่องเร่งด่วนและจำเป็นอย่างยิ่งที่เราต้องทำให้พวกเขาเปิดใจและรับฟังเสียงแห่งพระวรสาร การจะเข้าใจเนื้อหาของพระวรสาร ต้องอาศัยการการดลใจจากพระจิตเจ้า พระองค์จะเปิดใจเราให้ก้าวไปหาพระเยซูคริสต์ เพื่อนแท้ของเยาวชนทุกคน พ่อมาที่นี่ เพื่อสอนความหวังที่ถูกต้องสำหรับการดำเนินชีวิตให้เยาวชนทุกคน"

หลังจากกล่าวทักทายเยาวชนเสร็จ พระสันตะปาปาได้เสด็จไปพักผ่อนที่ศูนย์การศึกษาเคนท์เฮิร์สต์ ซึ่งอยู่ภายใต้การดำเนินงานของคณะโอปุส เดอี โดยพระองค์จะพักผ่อนด้วยการสวดภาวนา, ฟังการบรรเลงเปียโน, เขียนหนังสือ ก่อนจะเสด็จไปร่วมพิธีต้อนรับพระสันตะปาปาอย่างเป็นทางการ ณ บารังการู บริเวณดาร์ลิ่ง ฮาร์เบอร์ ในวันพฤหัสบดีที่ 17 กรกฏาคม 2008

การเสด็จเยือนออสเตรเลียครั้งนี้ จัดเป็นครั้งที่ 4 ที่ออสเตรเลียได้มีโอกาสต้อนรับพระสันตะปาปา ส่วนพระสันตะปาปาเบเนดิกต์ นี่เป็นครั้งแรกที่พระองค์เสด็จเยือนประเทศแห่งนี้
